What to do if my crown comes off?
Published 9 May 2026
If your dental crown comes off, retrieve it immediately and contact your dentist for an emergency appointment. Rinse the crown with water and store it in a clean container. Avoid using household glues to reattach it, as these are toxic and can cause permanent damage to your tooth and gums.
To manage the area until your appointment:
- Protect the crown: Keep it in a safe place so your dentist can potentially recement it.
- Maintain hygiene: Gently brush the exposed tooth to keep the area clean and free of bacteria.
- Adjust your diet: Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth.
- Temporary fix: If necessary, use a temporary dental adhesive from a pharmacy to hold the crown in place.
