How long can a knocked out tooth last?

Published 9 May 2026

A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of survival if it is replanted within 30 minutes. While a tooth can potentially be saved up to 60 minutes after being avulsed, every minute it remains outside the socket reduces the likelihood of successful reattachment. Immediate emergency dental care is essential for long-term success.

To maximise the chances of saving the tooth:

  • Reinsert immediately: If possible, gently place the tooth back into the socket and bite on a soft cloth.
  • Keep it moist: If you cannot reinsert it, store the tooth in milk, saliva, or a saline solution.
  • Avoid tap water: Do not rinse or store the tooth in water, as this can damage the root cells.
  • Handle with care: Always hold the tooth by the crown (the white part) and never touch the root.
